The 49th International Mathematical Olympiad
(IMO) will take place from July 10th to 22nd, 2008 in Madrid, Spain.
This is for the first time that Spain hosts the event.
The most brilliant young mathematicians of the world will gather in
Madrid to share and exchange ideas as well as establish between each
other enduring ties of friendship.
More than a hundred countries have registered so far, each sending
from 2 to 6 contestants or more than half a thousand in total. With
leaders, deputy leaders and observers the number of participants is
close to a thousand.
IMO 2008 is organized by
Real
Sociedad Matemática Española.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World
Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is
held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959
in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded
to over 90 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Advisory Board ensures
that the competition takes place each year and that each host country
observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO. Previous year the
48th IMO had been held in
Vietnam.
